A transponder key looks like an ordinary metal key with a plastic head, but the head contains a tiny chip that broadcasts an encrypted code to a coil around your ignition when you turn the key. If the code doesn’t match what your car’s immobilizer expects, the engine simply refuses to start—even if the physical key perfectly cuts the ignition cylinder.
